Relaxation and Guided Imagery are methods that teach people how to become deeply relaxed while conscious. When sensory images are then added to the experience, the body treats these images as if they are happening. For example, one can imagine themselves at the beach and feel the warmth of the sun on their back. In a deep state of relaxation the body will experience these sensory effects as it does not discriminate the imagined event from the real one. This creates a therapeutic process in which healthful images and healing processes can be introduced, even practicing being relaxed during painful medical procedures can occur, and the body will respond positively.
